SPARK! in 2016

Fly me to the Moon
As part of the Rubin Center's STEAM family day in February, we offered a movement/performance workshop to explore with children how to interact and respond with their bodies to the Matters of Gravity art installation. We had about 15 children in attendance.

Rethinking Dance Education (Consulting with Rochester School in Bogotá, Colombia)
In March, our Director traveled to her former school in Bogotá, Colombia where she spent 3 days modeling classes for K-12 teachers and training them in how to use improvisation and creative dance to integrate various curriculum components and get students to explore dance in new ways. Including students, teachers and administrators we impacted over 60 people on this trip.

Performance and Improvisation for Social Change (El Paso, TX workshop)

In April, in2improv joined forces once again with the Social Justice Initiative at the University of Texas at El Paso to offer a 3-hour workshop to students, faculty and community leaders on how we can create with play and performance new ways of relating to others. In this, our second annual workshop, we had over 30 participants and we are already planning the next one in 2017!

Dance Improvisation Intensive (Ciudad Juarez, Mexico)
This August, we partnered with The Chihuahuan Institute of Culture to offer our first dance improvisation intensive in Ciudad Juarez. This was a big step in the fulfillment of our mission to generate access to improvisation and experimental approaches to performance across the border. Below are the nine dancers that joined us.

Performance and Improvisation for Social Change (Hamilton, Canada workshop)
Picture
In September we were in Ontario, Canada for over a week. Our Founders were invited by colleagues from the organization Under the Willows to offer a public workshop at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. We worked with about 15 local artists and community organizers and generated discussion around the importance of celebrating performance, improvisation and other 'weird' behaviors as a way to embrace and highlight our world's diversity.

Workshop with Magicians without Borders in Bogotá, Colombia
In November we spent an afternoon with Magicians without Borders in the slums of Bogotá, Colombia. These six young magicians have been taking magic lessons once a week for the past three years and have been invited to perform nationally and internationally. We worked on performance presence and getting out of our comfort zones. It was a blast!

In addition to all these events, our Director continues to use in2improv's methodology in the El Paso Independent School District Fine Arts Initiative led by the El Paso Community Foundation. This year, her involvement reached over 150 teachers and students from 3 elementary schools.
