Dr. Lois Holzman visits the border
We were honored to co-host our dear friend and mentor Dr. Lois Holzman in a 4-day visit in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. Joining forces with community organizers in Ciudad Juarez and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), we were able to offer 5 public events impacting over 150 people. A HUGE thank you to our co-sponsors: UTEP's Liberal Arts Honors Program, UTEP's Women and Gender Studies, The Social Justice Initiative, UTEP's Department of Theater and Dance, UTEP's Center for Civic Engagement, The Fred Newman Center, and Tira Paro.

Creating a coalition
The Fred Newman Center and ImprovISA are coming together to form a binational coalition called Performing Communities de Esperanza (PCE). Dr. Holzman's visit helped us catalyze the efforts to launch it and we will be sending an official announcement in early 2018. PCE will create resources and training in social therapeutics and performance activism in Spanish and will lead performance-based initiatives in Ciudad Juarez and El Paso. Our first task is to get the Fred Newman Center (pictured right) ready to hold our meetings and social therapy groups lead by social therapist Miguel Cortes! Stay tuned for more.

Human Development and Revolution: A Conversation with Dr. Lois Holzman
About 20 people organized by our colleagues from the Fred Newman Center got together to share and imagine how social therapeutics can help us build community on the border. Several of the people present have become the core group now developing PCE (see above). |
4th Module of the certificate program "Interventions with At-risk Youth: Concepts, Experiences and Tools"
For an entire morning, we shared Dr. Holzman's take on play as revolutionary activity both in theory and in practice with 40 educators in a certificate program headed by Mariana Soledad Loya Parra. Mariana is also a co-founder of the Fred Newman Center and a leader in the local organization Techo Comunitario and the community network Tira Paro in Ciudad Juarez. |
