How did we get this idea?

in2improv developed out of COLAB, a class at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign that explores improvisation and ensemble composition between dancers, engineers and musicians. This exploration opened a door for us to start questioning issues of performance, presence, relationality, creativity, the significance of touch and impromptu composition.

Since we started working together, we have come to realize how the benefits of fostering creativity are magnified when the creative activity is done collaboratively in groups.  We are social beings, we work, play, breathe and live socially and with our increasingly individualistic society we don’t get many chances to get better at doing things together. That is why we have decided to focus our research and work in various approaches that use this social lens to foster human development.

Please note that starting in 2018 this site will no longer be regularly updated, but will continue to exist in an archival capacity. For current activities, please visit the Institute for Improvisation and Social Action at www.improvisationandsocialaction.org
